Mamas-to-be! I’m so excited to join the motherhood club with you. Pregnancy continues to be this beautiful, unexpected journey that I’ve loved indulging in. The kicks, the hiccups (and even those aches + pains!) make me feel like a mama already.
The hardest part for me is adjusting to an ever-changing body. It’s not just our bellies that grow! I wasn’t expecting quite so many changes everywhere else, which can make getting dressed in the morning a full-on JOB. Something fits one week, but doesn’t the next. I admittedly walked around with unbuttoned pants for far too long, before finally caving into my first pair of maternity jeans. Oh my, they are HEAVEN, and I’m pretty sure I’ll want to wear them long after the babe arrives!
For those of you in this with me, I wanted to share some of my style secrets that have gotten me through pregnancy. Let’s be real — leggings are my new bestie, and maxi dresses forever have my heart. Here are five maternity style staples I can’t live without…
- JERSEY DRESS
The jersey dress is a dream because it will continue to stretch over a growing belly! I’ve loved this style staple, because it’s one piece that can easily be dressed up or down. Plus, it’s super comfortable and shows off the beautiful parts of your new figure!
- A-LINE MINI
In those first few months of pregnancy, I really leaned on A-line silhouettes, because they gave my body room to breathe and masked a belly I hadn’t yet shared publicly. Pair the dress with a trench or bomber jacket, if you want to add some shape. Once you get into later months of pregnancy, this silhouette may prove harder to pull off, because it can merely make you look wide without showing off a baby belly!
- MATERNITY DENIM
Thank heavens for maternity denim! Purchase a few pairs sooner rather than later, and avoid the discomfort I put myself through the first several months! A number of designer denim brands make maternity jeans, including Paige, J. Brand and TopShop. You can lean toward styles with elastic pockets at the sides during the first several months, and switch to the full bellyband by your last trimester.
- BLACK LEGGINGS
Black leggings will quickly become your BFF. Seriously, I wear them nearly everyday! For one, black is slimming and makes anyone feel good. Plus, the leggings themselves are stretchy and oh-so-cozy, which is a welcome relief during pregnancy. I bought a few pairs in the beginning, and they’ve worked throughout each trimester. Try dressing them up with booties and a jacket for work or dinner, or wear them casually with tennies and a sweatshirt.
- MAXI DRESS
A maxi dress is an ultimate favorite of mine during pregnancy. This style staple is comfortable yet chic. It works for nearly any occasion, from a date night, to a friend’s party, to even a day at the office when paired with a blazer. Bonus? Maxi dresses look good on everyone!
