BCB MomIRL: Sasha Adler

By lindsay

By Samantha Lande, BCB Staff Writer

Sasha Adler is as creative as they come. While we spend hours lusting after impeccably designed rooms in magazines—ones our kids would probably destroy—she is out crafting them. As one of the two design directors for Nate Berkus Associates (yes, that Nate Berkus), she has dreamed up and implemented some of the most enviable spaces we’ve ever seen—all while balancing two little ones at home. She tells us how she makes it all happen and why she thinks moms are the real heroines.

NAME: Sasha Adler

AGE: 35

KIDS: Harper, 4 and Theo 20 months

OCCUPATION: Design Director at Nate Berkus Associates

LIVE IN: Chicago, IL (Lakeview)

FAVORITE CHARITY: Children’s Research Fund

Tell us your backstory

I started out working in the fashion/magazine industry in New York and when I moved back to Chicago decided to take an internship at Nate Berkus when I could not find a job in either industry that I was passionate about. That’s when I fell head over heels in love. I am so fortunate to honestly say that I am crazy about my job.

What does a typical weekday look like for you?

Most days I wake up before my kids and quickly get myself ready, so we can all start our day having breakfast together before school. One of the best parts of my day is walking my daughter into school, especially since she still lets me hold her hand and I am sadly aware that these days are numbered. Then I head to the office where I could be doing anything from picking out furniture/fabrics, meeting a client or attending a construction site meeting. No two days are alike, which keeps me totally enthralled. After work I head home to have dinner with my kids, give baths and cuddle with them while they fall asleep. I try to make it home to be with them, even if I end up having an event or dinner afterwards.

What is in your power pack?

  1. Honest Company baby wipes – most often I use them on things that are not kid related
  2. My notebook, where I jot down ideas for projects and all of my lists.
  3. My phone, which is thoughtful enough to send me reminders when something slips my mind and hold zillions of pictures of my kids, when I am not with them
  4. Large sunglasses, so I can hide the fact that I haven’t gotten as much sleep as needed or found the time to put on makeup yet
  5. Snacks for the kids (and for me)

What is your super power?

I’m not sure I have mastered it yet, but I am trying to be present in the moment, not at the park with my kids answering a work email. That and asking for help when I need it.

What is your arch nemesis?

Time. There never seems to be enough of it.

 Who is your Wonder Woman?

My mom. Now that I am a mom, I have a whole new appreciation for how she worked full time and still found time to bake us homemade cookies and draw elaborate pictures on our lunch bags every single day.

Who is your Partner in Crime?

My husband, Greg. I do not know what I would do without him in my life. I adore him.
I am fortunate enough to have the most amazing work/best friend sidekick too. My co-design director, Lauren Buxbaum.

Who is your supporting cast of characters ?

It truly takes a village. My husband and I are so fortunate to have close family in Chicago, the most incredible nanny (who is basically part of our family), as well and a great group of friends to give us advice and be there for us whenever we need. Does wine count too?

How do you protect (and give back to) your community?

I got involved with the Childern’s Research Fund several years ago and absolutely love the organization, which supports medical research at the Stanley Manne Children’s Research Institute affiliated with Lurie’s Children’s Hospital. There are so many fantastic causes, but this one really has my heart.

Which Superhero do you most identify with?
Moms. All of them. They are all superheroes and I am totally in awe of how they seem to do it all.
