Every superhero needs a partner-in-crime; just ask Bonnie Micheli and Tracy Roemer. The two savvy and fit moms founded the super challenging treadmill interval workout, Shred415 in 2011. They are now proud mamas to seven locations and a ton of “shred” regulars (not to mention five kids between them). They tell us what it’s like to run one of the hottest workouts in town, their secret desire to be DJs and why they want to be just like Elastigirl.
NAME: Bonnie Micheli and Tracy Roemer
AGES: 38 and 44
KIDS: Sam (7) and Fletcher (9) Micheli and Reese (10), Sam (8) and Tess (7) Roemer
OCCUPATION: Founders and owners Shred415
FAVORITE CHARITY: The Alzheimer’s Association is so important to us because both our father-in-laws suffer from Alzheimer’s. We’ve seen first hand how the disease can affect a family.
What is your backstory?
Bonnie began teaching group exercise in 2008 and is a certified personal trainer through the American Council of Exercise. After extensive training in college, Bonnie began experimenting with workout programming, alternating between cardiovascular work and strength training. She quickly saw results in herself and became a believer in both HIIT and strength training. After training clients and teaching small group exercise classes, Bonnie’s ambitions leaned to owning her own studio. After meeting Tracy, the rest is history!
Tracy is a nationally recognized fitness expert. She has presented master classes and Kwando workshops to fitness professionals, and she created and developed Gorilla Sports’ Kwando Program, a total body conditioning class incorporating elements of boxing, kickboxing and tae kwan do. Tracy’s fitness career spans more than 15 years on the West Coast and in Chicago. She’s worked as managing director of a club with five fitness centers in San Francisco, Chicago and Los Angeles, as director of weight loss and nutrition for a large national gym, and as general manager of a boutique gym in Chicago known for its personal training.
Tell us about your typical weekday:
The day starts with typical mom stuff—we wake up our kids, get them ready for school and drop them off. Then we grab a coffee (an absolute must!) and get working. We teach classes, work with instructors, visit the studios and constantly strive to improve our brand. There is no typical day at Shred415—we’ll end up subbing a class, fixing treadmills and chatting with our clients. People are also constantly coming and going from our corporate office above the Lincoln Park studio. We have a revolving door — you never know who will walk through the door.
Tell us about a “save the day moment.”
Our biggest accomplishment was when we opened the first-ever Shred415 location on April 2, 2011. It was a lot of ups and downs prior to the opening, from choosing the location to picking the name and logo to hiring the instructors. We will never forget the day we finally opened, looked at each other and thought, “Well, here we go!”
Who is your Wonder Woman?
Our moms for sure! We both grew up with moms who proved to us that women really can do it all. They showed us that we could do anything that we set our minds to.
What is your super power?
We both agree that finding great husbands is our secret superpower. Without our supportive husbands who help us with our family life, we could not run our business.
If you could have a secret identity what would it be and what would you use it for?
We would love to be DJs. If we had more time, we would use that power to make more Shred415 playlists.
What is in your Wonder Woman power pack?
What would you consider your theme song?
“Best Day of My Life” by American Authors
Which Superhero do you most identify with and why?
We love Elastigirl! She is the ultimate supermom. She uses both her superpowers and her innate abilities as a wife and mother to unify her family and protects them at all costs. She is quick-witted, resourceful, talented, passionate, driven and supportive.
Who is your supporting cast of characters that helps you to achieve Wonder Woman status?
We couldn’t get it done without our entire corporate team: Matt Micheli (COO and Bonnie’s husband!);
Mark Beier and Jeremy Walton (co-Directors of Training); Jen Wilkins (Regional Manager); Steve Jennings (Director of Operations); Korey Huyler (Director of Marketing); Kathleen Jones (Social Media guru); Kelly Ward (Graphic Designer); and Kristen Maslowski (Retail Specialist). Plus all of our studio managers.
How do you protect (and give back to) your community?
Through our Shred415 clients! They come to us with various issues and we try to help, in turn building our community from the ground up.
Bump Club and Beyond will make a donation to The Alzheimer’s Association in honor of Bonnie and Tracy. Click here for more information on Shred415 and to see what it is all about.
