Ever look at a piece of furniture in your house and wonder what you could do to spruce it up a bit? Meet Meg Piercy, a DIY maven, who created her thriving business MegMade, after doing projects in her own house. Fast-forward and she now repurposes and designs tons of furniture out of her recently opened Chicago storefront and via Etsy (check out her stuff—it’s amazing! BCB Founder, Lindsay already has two pieces of her own!) She tells us how she became an accidental mompreneur, why her husband is the ultimate sidekick and why Raven from X-men is one badass superhero.
NAME: Meg Piercy
AGE: 31
KIDS: Wells (3), Brooks (3.5 months)
OCCUPATION: Owner of MegMade
WHERE DO YOU LIVE: Chicago, IL
FAVORITE CHARITY: By The Hand
What is your backstory?
I call myself an accidental mompreneur. I painted my sons changing table, got addicted, turned it into a business and now am one of 8 employees! Both my husband and my parents are entrepreneurial and definitely helped give us the confidence to take risks.
Tell us about your typical weekday…
Oh geez, this is hard! Every day is so different, but what is the same is that each day is planned out the night before. One day we are strategizing, the next selling and then the next, painting. The challenge and the fun lies within the constant change.
Tell us about a “save the day moment”…
Although I think the best is yet to come, I think our biggest accomplishment is when we signed the lease to move the company out of our spare bedroom and into a store. It was a huge leap of faith for us. Now just a year and a half later, we have grown beyond what we could have ever even dreamed!
Who is your Sidekick/Partner in Crime?
My hubs. He is the best business partner, husband and father a gal could dream of. He supported me in starting this business and stands by my side through the ups and downs.
What would you consider your theme song?
The song we danced to at our wedding was Michael Buble “Everything.” The lyrics say “ And in this crazy life, and through these crazy times
It’s you, it’s you; you make me sing. You’re every line, you’re every word, you’re everything.”
This so rings true! In every crazy and awesome day, he is my rock.
Who is your Wonder Woman?
My mom and my sister both share a special part of my heart. My mom for raising us with such amazing values and instilling hard work in us. My sister for teaching me about what it is to be a good friend and mom.
What is your super power?
I am still learning, but having a list! Knowing what needs to get done and putting the most important thing as the most important thing!
If you could have a secret identity what would it be and what would you use it for?
I hate Chicago traffic, so I wish I could fly or just transcend time. That would make it so much easier when my kids get restless in the car and whine or when I am running late to a meeting.
What is your arch nemesis?
Distraction. Oh, how I hate thee! I could get so much more done in a day if it weren’t for constantly being pulled in a different direction than my focus!
What is in your Wonder Woman power pack?
My phone: Sadly, I need it for just about everything. I do try to put it down when I am being intentionally present with my husband or kids though. I have a love hate relationship with it. Chapstick: I look at those girls with red lipstick and wish I could do it, but I am a chapstick girl through and through Business cards: I bring them everywhere. Never know when you need to hand one out Baby wipes: Whether for my computer screen from kids fingerprints or to change a diaper, always need them Cars: With 2 boys, I always have a train or a car in my purse for instant fun.
Which Superhero do you most identify with and why?
Raven, the character Jennifer Lawrence played in X-Men. She is constantly changing shapes and identities to fit in to the current circumstance. As a new business I wear so many hats and constantly shift from role to role.
Who is your supporting cast of characters?
I am a blessed gal with the most amazing business partners, employees, nanny and friends. They all play a huge role in the success of me and MegMade! Couldn’t do it without them.
How do you protect (and give back to) your community?
Giving back to the community has been a HUGE part of MegMade and my identity from day one. I worked for a not-for-profit for three years and still do part time! I love giving back, it is what brings me the most joy. That is why we partner with five charities at MegMade. Check them out at megmade.com/donation.
You can find Meg at her store’s new location, 2415 West Barry in Chicago or at megmade.com. We will be making a donation to By the Hand in honor of Meg!
