Mention mealtime to any parent of a toddler, and they will tell you how much they loathe it. Maybe it’s the inevitability that the floor will look a war zone post-meal after chicken nuggets serve as mini-hand grenades… but we digress. Our Wonder Woman this week, Lindsey Laurain took her frustration for dinner disasters and created a product that helps parents fight back –in the form of a silicone mat that serves as both a placemat and a plate/bowl. The Happy Mat is nearly impossible to pick-up to throw and makes cleaning up easy-peasy (hence her company name, ezpz). She tells us how she rapidly brought the product to market and how she gives back to the special needs community.
Tell us your backstory…
Our life can be pretty chaotic, especially at mealtime, and my husband and I were fed up with the messiness and cleanup time dedicated to each meal. One night (in the midst of his frustration) my husband said, “Someone needs to create something kids can’t toss or throw at meals!” The next day I hopped online and, low and behold, nothing exists. From that day on I was committed to creating mealtime serving ware that made meals with kids ezpz – and that is how the Happy Mat came to be!
Tell us about a “save the day moment”…
My biggest accomplishment thus far is bringing a product to market in 6 months 🙂 BUT the most exciting accomplishment is when Jamie Grayson posted! After Jamie (the Baby Guy NYC) posted a video, ezpz went viral and we were funded via Kickstarter in 24 hours.
Who is your Wonder Woman?
My Mom 🙂 She has NO business sense but is the best mom EVER. She loves unconditionally, is so supportive and is honestly a huge asset to our family and ezpz. Grammy packs a lot of boxes and watches the boys for us.
If you could have a secret identity what would it be and what would you use it for?
I would make everyone nice, honest and positive. One of my struggles is how negative and toxic so many people are. If everyone was just KIND and honest the world would be a better place. This is why I love the Changing the Face of Beauty campaign. I am striving to make a difference and wish more people would do the same so that is what I would do! I would also love to cure illnesses so I could ensure my family lives a long, healthy life together 🙂
What is your super power?
Passion, Drive, Discipline, Positivity, Fun.
What is your arch nemesis?
Time 🙂 I wish there was more time to get it all done. I love working and get sad when the day is done or I can’t get it all done
What is in your Wonder Woman power pack? (Five things you don’t leave home without.)
Obsessed with my LV never full bag 🙂 It is always full though and I always have my computer, phone, power cords, money and wipes.
Who is your Sidekick/Partner in Crime?
My husband is my everything and has been so supportive throughout this journey. In regard to ezpz, Tammy is my partner in crime. Tams and I go WAY back (elementary school, bridesmaid) but ezpz has allowed us to reconnect and it has been a dream come true. I get to chat every single day with my best friend and we now do business together! I also have a great team and we are like family.
How do you protect (and give back to) your community?
Giving back and making a difference is our number one priority. We have a lot of “giving back” planned but for now our focus is supporting the Special Needs community. Along with participating in the Changing the Face of Beauty campaign and giving back, we have also hired Dawn Winkelmann (feeding/speech therapist) who will be full time in August! Dawn will be our Special Needs Coordinator and organize our “giving back” more formally.
What would you consider your theme song?
Lose Yourself by Eminem 🙂
Who is your supporting cast of characters that helps you to achieve Wonder Woman status?
My husband and 3 boys 🙂 I also have the most amazing team. We are VERY small; my goal is to stay small and create a culture that is like family.
