Raffi

When you hear the name Raffi, it probably brings you back to your own childhood.  Tunes of Baby Beluga may float into your head. This year, Raffi is turning 70 but he’s still gracing the stage with some of his classic favorites and he’s even in the process of writing a few new tunes for an album that will be released soon. We chatted with Raffi before he makes his way to Chicago, this Sunday, April 8th. (Tickets still available) on what he’s been up to since we’ve been kids!

On his older fans…

He lovingly refers to his older fans (our generation) as Beluga grads. One of his favorite part of touring is seeing these “Beluga grads” experience his songs with their own children.

On his younger fans…

Kids are kids. “The world may change around them but they have the same universal needs,” he said.

On touring…

Raffi took a 10 year hiatus from touring but once he got back on the stage he never turned back.  “I missed the energy of the songs,” he said, “so I went back to the concert stage and every year I look forward to the shows.” He no longer does a full scale tour, but gets excited about the prospect of entertaining his young fans in a handful of cities at a time.

On his new album…

Raffi finds inspiration everywhere, but one of his biggest inspirations is his dog, a border collie and standard poodle blend named Luna. On his new album, released in August, there are three songs inspired by her including one called “Dog on the Floor,” which will also be the title.  He didn’t share much more but expect another song about Farmers’ Markets and even one about Dragonflies!
