City Moms Panel: Working Out With Little Ones in Tow

I had a wonderful opportunity to speak on the Chicago Moms Panel at the Best of Bump Club. I spoke  on the topic of working out with kids.  Whichever workout class or gym you choose to go to, my top tip would be to find a workout buddy. I try to schedule workout dates with other friends or family to keep motivated. Knowing that I’m meeting up with a workout buddy holds me accountable for going. Working out with my kids and meeting up with other mom friends and their kids also makes it a playdate and workout in one.<

Here’s a list of some of my top recommended places to get a workout with kids it tow:

Shred415: Shred is my go to workout in the city. Not only is it convenient with the multiple locations to choose from, it also has child care at each location. The Shred415 experience is an instructor-led, calorie-burning, interval training class.  There are typically four 15 minute segments that alternate between cardio work on treadmills and strength training on the floor. VIP Bump Club members can take advantage of free childcare with the Shred the Baby Bump package.

Crosstown Fitness: We used to live a few doors down from the West Loop location and it was convenient for me to attend their group 50-minute high intensity interval training classes. I also used to do one-on-one 30-minute personal training sessions with a trainer which was great because I brought my daughter with me in the kids room and squeezed in a workout while my little one was occupied. VIP Bump Club members can take advantage of the free 14-day introduction pass, 15% off monthly unlimited memberships and 4 personal training sessions for $99.

Fit4Mom: There are a couple locations in the city and when my daughter was very young I used to take Stroller Strides classes in the loop with other mom friends. It was a great way to enjoy my neighborhood, spend time with my baby, get a workout in, and meet other moms all in one 60 minute workout. From lunges up and down Grant Park to quick jogs around Buckingham Fountain, it was a fun way to workout while still soaking in my time with my baby. VIP Bump Club members can take advantage of their local perks, ranging from $20 off select packages in Chicago to two weeks free in Anaheim/Orange County.

Running outdoors: There’s nothing like running by the lake. Endless scenery without worrying about traffic. When it’s summer in Chicago, you have to soak up all the sun you can get, so I try to get outdoors for long walks or runs when I can.  I don’t consider myself a runner by any means but somehow my sister and I trained, mentored high school students, and ran the Rock ‘n Roll 1/2 marathon a couple years ago with CARA Road Scholars.

Mommy and Me Yoga: This is way less intense than all the other workouts mentioned above but it is a great way to do yoga and spend some nice  quality time with your baby. There are tons of mommy and me yoga options throughout the city and it’s typically a drop in session, which means no commitments needed.  This is a great way to meet other new moms or meet up with old friends. Since everyone there is a mom, there are no rules, so you can change diapers, feed the baby or hop into the yoga class whenever you and baby are ready.

Now that summer is around the corner, I hope you can enjoy Chicago summer with your littles and hopefully you can meet some new mama friends along the way!
