We are so excited to be heading to our 6th stop Gearapalooza in Edmonton, on Thursday, May 21! To celebrate, we can’t wait to introduce you to some of our favorite Edmonton moms. These amazing women will be joining us at Gearapalooza so be sure to stop by and say hi!
We want you to meet…
1) Name: Deanne Ferguson
Kid(s) and Ages: Jack (10) & Gavin (7)
Where do you live? Edmonton Alberta
Tell us a little bit about yourself…
Work life: I own Box Social Event Planning which is an event planning company that organizes family friendly events in Edmonton. Through Box Social I run monthly mall programs that are free for parents to attend. They also give small businesses an opportunity to showcase their programs to a captive audience and I love that I get to help them fill their classes.
I love food and finding great new restaurants, so I was thrilled when I got a contract last year to become the Food Stage Coordinator and Emcee for the Home Shows in Edmonton. Not only do I get to explore Edmonton and find the most amazing Chefs to come onstage; I get to hang out and interview guests like Chef Shaun O’Neale (MasterChef Season 7 winner), Bryan Baeumler, and Kortney & Dave Wilson from HGTV’s Masters of Flip.
Along with Box Social Event Planning I am also a part of Alberta Mamas which is a collective of amazing local women (that I am lucky enough to call my friends as well) that showcase everything our beautiful province has to offer. We talk everything parenting, exploring with the kids, recipes, and more.
What has been the biggest reward of motherhood? I love that my kids have kept me playing. I think that as adults we take ourselves too seriously most of the time. I love that they make me laugh and be silly every single day.
What’s your best “mom-hack” you think other moms could benefit from? (We all one at least one time or sanity saving tip that everyone would want to know…spill it!) I go by the law of averages. Some weeks I am an awesome mom. Other weeks I struggle. A lot. BUT I keep it in the back of my head that if you average it over a month I am doing OK. This applies to everything. Meals in particular. Some weeks it is home cooked everything from scratch and the next it may be Drive-Thru meals every night. My “mom-hack” is to not beat myself up over those weeks because it puts me in a more relaxed, calm state.
What is the best part about where you live? Everything. I love Edmonton.
Favorite thing to do with your kids in your hometown. I love picking up lunch from a local restaurant and going to find a park. Watching them play and run is one of my favourite things to do. Our river valley is beautiful so we often try to find a playground by the river so we can go walking after we’ve played a while.
Favorite date night in your hometown. Going to a restaurant with a great cocktail menu. My husband and I do Cocktail Monday’s every week so when we get a chance to go out, we love trying new things and getting ideas for when we make cocktails at home.
What are 5 things that you could not “mom” without? 1. My husband. I know it is super cheesy, but he really does make this whole parenting thing easier. 2. Grandparents. Whether they are babysitting, having us over on the weekend so I don’t have to cook, or helping with other things; I couldn’t be the parent I am without the help of Grandparents. 3. A planner. And not an electronic one an old school paper planner. 4. Netflix. Because sometimes you just need an hour to do nothing and nothing distracts like their favourite show. 5. The internet. I don’t know how parents survived before Google.
What are your 5 must-have items in your diaper bag? It has been a while since I’ve had to carry one but currently in my purse I have: three toy dinosaurs, a pack of crayons, sticky notes, my wallet, and a half eaten Costco hot dog (I wish I was kidding about this)
When you have time to yourself, what do you like to do? I love to read especially if I can go to a cute coffee shop and enjoy a whole coffee while it is still hot while I read a book.
Who are your “mom idols?” My Mom and my Mother – In – Law. They have been incredibly helpful and give great insight into parenting. They have taught me so much about how to show my kids that they are safe, loved, and how they can do hard things. They are my go-to when I need advice or just need to talk out a problem.
Who is in your mom tribe and how did you meet them? I don’t think I have one particular mom tribe. I am lucky in that I have a few groups of amazing women that I call my friends. Some I have met through the internet and others through playgroups when my kids were little. It took me a really long time to find these groups and I am thankful for them all.
What is one piece of advice for new moms that you wish someone told you before motherhood? Don’t try to do it all. It is OK to not be able to do everything on your to-do list. Sometimes all you can do that day is make it to bedtime and that is OK.
How do you balance it all? I don’t think I do. It goes back to that average’s thing. Some weeks I nail it. Other weeks I leave the house without shoes on the kids. The ebbs and flow of my schedule make life more interesting.
If you had a theme song, what would it be? “I’m Just a Girl” by No Doubt
Tell us a little bit about your blog/IG account/online persona and what is your mission behind it. I use social media to let people know about cool, fun activities to do with kids, I post about our travels (we use the summer to take off and go camping as a family for two months), and I try to add a bit of humour/attitude of “don’t take things too seriously”. My husband and I also love Cocktail Monday (search #cocktailMonday on Instagram) where we take turns making cocktails for each other while watching terrible reality TV like The Bachelor. It is our date night without having to pay a babysitter and I look forward to it every week. Tell us a little bit about yourself…
Work life: As of this month I have taken over as owner of Modern Mama Inc! We are a locally focused online resource for Canadian moms and we have been around since 2008. We write all about parenting, what’s happening in our communities, and amazing products and companies we think parents would benefit from.
What has been the biggest reward of motherhood? Seeing their personalities come out and knowing that I am helping shape who they are.
What’s your best “mom-hack” you think other moms could benefit from? (We all one at least one time or sanity saving tip that everyone would want to know…spill it!) Whenever head out on an out of town trip I like to put outfits together into ziplock bags! I will label each bag with what outfit it is which saves us a ton of time getting ready in the mornings.
What is the best part about where you live? We have so many amazing festivals that happen throughout our city.
Favorite thing to do with your kids in your hometown. We love heading to our local zoo! We have purchased an annual pass so I look forward to going more often.
Favorite date night in your hometown. Definitely heading to Whyte Ave and having some dinner and drinks. Especially during the Summer when we get to enjoy some sunshine on a rooftop patio.
What are 5 things that you could not “mom” without? Recently it has been our purchase of our Google Home! It helps me maintain our grocery lists and activities, Starbucks, ordering groceries online, mac & cheese, dry shampoo.
What are your 5 must-have items in your diaper bag? Hand sanitizer, snacks, a ton of baby wipes even though my kids are potty trained they are so handy, spare clothes in ziplocks so dirty clothes don’t touch everything else in the bag, something to entertain them with whether that be toys or an Ipad now that they are older.
When you have time to yourself, what do you like to do? Have a hot cup of coffee and catch up on some of the mom vlogger videos that I love to watch, do some research on new things happening in my city, or visit with a friend!
Who are your “mom” idols? I love the message that Cat & Nat have on their Mom Truth videos and on their social media. And of course my own mother and mother-in-law.
Who is in your mom tribe and how did you meet them? I was quite young when I had my daughter so unfortunately, I didn’t have much of a tribe when I was a new mom. As my friends have gotten married and had children of their own my tribe grew! I really feel now that we are moms our friendships are even stronger than before.
What is one piece of advice for new moms that you wish someone told you before motherhood? Motherhood is like any other job. No one loves their job every single day!
How do you balance it all? I definitely struggle with this one! I have learnt to let things go and to pick my battles with my kids. Sometimes the laundry gets forgotten about and needs to be rewashed 3 times and sometimes I manage to get it all washed and folded in the same day. You just have to roll with the punches! I am also fortunate to have a husband with a flexible work schedule so I often have him at home with me! I’m not sure what I would do without him.
If you had a theme song, what would it be? I would say the Friends theme song! I feel like it applies to who I am and it is my favorite show.
