Part 1: Meet Some of Our Favorite Austin Moms

By Emily Savage

Our 2020 Gearapalooza Tour kicks off in Austin on Sunday, March 1st!  We can’t wait to bring our ultimate baby gear and registry event to ATX where attendees will meet the best baby gear brands, test-drive all of the latest products, ask all of their questions and learn how to use everything safely from our BCB’s Baby Gear Expert, Jamie Grayson!

We’ve had our roots planted in Austin for nearly eight years.   We love ATX as a whole, and by and large we adore the parents, parents-to-be and families who reside there.   We recently caught up with some of our favorite Austin moms.  they shared with us their must-have products, top tips and helped us to reflect on the last decade! ICYMI, BCB is celebrating a decade of community in 2020!

We are so lucky to have these amazing women as a part of BCB.  Most of them will also be joining us at Gearapalooza so be sure to stop by and say hi!  Check them out and why we love them so much…

We Want You To Meet…

Name: Bryn Huntpalmer

Age: 34

Kid(s) and Ages: Adelaide (eight), Darwin (six) and Harvey (one)

Ten years ago, what were you doing and how is that different from your life now? My husband and I are celebrating our ten year anniversary this year so it’s easy for me to think back to that time! We were still trying to figure out grad school, where we wanted to live, and when we wanted to start having kids. We were so stressed about how everything would work out that I wish I could go back and tell those newlyweds to just enjoy that kid-free time and that there would be plenty of time for figuring it all out!

Where did you learn about BCB? BCB reached out to me in the early days of starting The Birth Hour and I attended my first Gearapalooza when I didn’t even have any babies at the time! I loved chatting with Lindsay and hearing about her journey with entrepreneurship in the pregnancy/baby space. She was one of the first people to encourage me to go “full time” with The Birth Hour!

What are FIVE must-have products that have gotten you through the last decade? I had my first two babies eight years ago and it’s amazing how many new products have emerged since then that I was able to use with my newest little one! It’s so hard to choose just five, but here are some products that stand out in my mind!
1. Milkies Milk Saver
2. Kindred Bravely Simply Sublime Nursing Tank
3. Crane Humidifier
4. Pack n Play + Slumberpod
5. Ergobaby Carriers

Give us your NUMBER ONE TIP for practicing self-care: Alone time! Having a third baby made me realize just how accustomed I had become to having some alone time throughout the day while my kids were at school. Now that we have a one year old I crave just being in the house alone or walking the aisles of Costco by myself.

What is your FAVORITE beauty product and why? I got super into using Essential Oils when I was pregnant with my third and I make a lot of my own beauty products now! I even started an Instagram account sharing all of my faves—@brynessentials! I hardly ever wear makeup but when I do I wear Savvy Minerals mineral makeup. We really try to avoid artificial fragrances and other toxic personal care products.

What’s your NUMBER ONE tip for keeping your marriage/relationship with your significant other on point? Find time to spend together without kids but also give time to one another to do the things you loved doing before kids. It’s so important to not lose sight of who you both are outside of being parents.

What was the number one surprise about motherhood? How much it would change the trajectory of my career, in a good way!

What’s the one piece of advice you would like to share with other expecting or new moms? Find the other moms that will support you no matter what. You don’t have to agree on every parenting philosophy, you just need to be there for each other when you’re in the thick of it.

What are your best tips to create memories for your family? Take lots of videos! One of our favorite things to do is watch old video clips on our phones after the kids are in bed and laugh at all of the adorable things they did and said when they were younger. They aren’t videos of special vacations, holidays or outings—they are usually just funny interactions we happened to capture at home. I hardly ever look back at our professional family photos but those random videos are so priceless and we watch them over and over again!

We Want You To Meet…

Name: Lauren Nelson

Age: 31

Kid(s) and Ages: Raegan (five), Connor (three) and Ella (two)

Ten years ago, what were you doing and how is that different from your life now? I was working at golf courses in the administrative side of things. I had moved to San Antonio with my then boyfriend. That boyfriend is now my husband and I now hang at home with our three kids.

Where did you learn about BCB?  I just learned about BCB, and I so wish I had learned about it sooner! I’ve already spread the word about BCB to all my pregnant mom friends. What an amazing resource!

What have you learned from BCB? I’ve learned that there are indeed places to build up those tribes everyone is talking about during pregnancy. It’s so important to have friends who can relate during pregnancy and sometimes that is hard to find.  With BCB a community is practically at your fingertips.

What are YOUR must-have products that have gotten you through the last decade?

  1. My UppaBaby stroller has been with me through all three kids and we still use it today.
  2. I also was a huge fan of the Doc-A-Tot. All three of my kids used that and my two year old just stopped using hers.
  3. I swear by Freshly Picked shoes too.  They stay on, and that’s a huge win!
  4. I also swear by our Hatch Sound Machines — all three of my kids use them today and they’re life savers!

Give us your NUMBER ONE TIP for practicing self-care:

Asking for help and it’s one of the hardest things to do. For some reason as new moms, we feel like we have to prove we can do it, but hell, we just become moms so quickly, how are we supposed to know what to do? It’s trial and error and asking for help when you need it. You need a break. Moms need a break. It’s necessary to being a good mom, so ask for it! You will be a better mom for it.

Your NUMBER ONE tip for keeping your marriage/relationship with your significant other on point?

Communication. It’s hard to communicate with small children around. Make time for it. We are just learning how to do that and it’s been a tremendous improvement for our marriage recently.

What was the number one surprise about motherhood?

How lonely you feel. I know that seems a tad depressing, but I didn’t realize how isolated I would feel at first. I didn’t realize that I would feel like that. So I always tell new Moms- don’t isolate yourself. It’s easy to do, but you have to get out of the house or invite friends over.

What is the number one lesson you’ve learned from another mom and who did you learn it from?

I had a friend kindly explain to me “crying it out.”  I know this is something that’s a personal choice but her kindness and compassion for explaining it really helped me in a tough sleep period and it worked out for our family..

What’s the one piece of advice you would like to share with other expecting or new moms?

You can do this, even when it feels like it’s the last thing you can do, you’ve got this.

What’s your favorite part about your kids’ ages now?

The things kids say at this age are absolutely hilarious. Their eyes are wide open, but the common sense hasn’t quite caught up.

How did you make the most of your maternity leave?

I embraced the time to hold the baby and took time showing off my baby to family and friends.

Favorite parenting/momlife/childhood quote:

“If it makes you and your family happy and it’s not hurting anyone else, then do it.” That’s my made-up go-to motto.

Most embarrassing thing your child(ren) has ever done in public:

My son chucked a red rain boot across a party store, because I wouldn’t let him eat chocolate at 9:15 am. I was embarrassed, but it was an impressive throw!

We Want You To Meet…

Name: Lauren Petrowski

Age: 36

Ten years ago, what were you doing and how is that different from your life now?

Ten years ago I was a newlywed working as a TV news reporter in Austin.  I worked the morning shift and woke up at 2:00 a.m.  I went on to be one of the hosts of the morning show for more than five years.  Life is much different now!  I no longer work full-time as a news anchor/reporter, and I’m a mom who’s been married for ten years.  I do a lot of freelance media work right now along with some blogging and am able to spend more time with my son—and get more sleep!

What have you learned from BCB?

BCB is a great resource for parents and parents-to-be to find the best products and services and connect with other parents.

What are FIVE must-have products that have gotten you through the last decade?

  1. white noise sound machine
  2. exercise ball
  3. Spanx
  4. Keurig coffee machine
  5. eye cream

Your NUMBER ONE tip for keeping your marriage/relationship with your significant other on point?

Get out on dates!  Lunch, dinner, a movie, a walk during the day.  Make it a point to schedule time together.

What was the number one surprise about motherhood?

I was surprised by how attached my son would be to his dad.  He has always been a total daddy’s boy and it was really tough as a new mom.  Now we have a great relationship, but it took time and work.

What is the number one lesson you’ve learned from another mom and who did you learn it from?

Accept help.  I’m sure I learned that from several moms, including my own.  We often try to do everything ourselves, but it’s OK to accept help and we should.

What would you tell yourself ten years ago?

There will be challenges, but you’re going to have an amazing life that you’ll be so grateful for every day!

What’s the one piece of advice you would like to share with other expecting or new moms?

Take care of yourself!  Learn to accept help and be OK with leaving your baby.

What’s one message that you think ALL WOMEN should hear?

Is your child loved?  Then you’re doing a good job.

How did you make the most of your maternity leave?

Whew, it was a tough one.  Our son was colicky and cried A LOT.  It was definitely different than I expected it to be.  We got out on walks often which was really good for all of us.

Favorite parenting/momlife/childhood quote:

“The funny thing about kids is, they are the reason we lose it and the reason we hold it together.”
