September is National Baby Safety Month. The health and safety of your baby and family is and always will be top priority at BCB. We caught up with one of our favorite pediatricians, Dr. Payal Adhikari from Child and Adolescent and Associates in Chicago for some top tips to keep your little one safe in the bath. We’ve also rounded up some of our favorite products to help you in the process.
Dr. Payal Adhikari is a board-certified pediatrician at Child and Adolescent Health Associates in Chicago, IL, and the mom to two little ones. She is the founder of Lola B Jewelry, a hypoallergenic Mommy+Me earring company called, and chronicles her life as a Mom+Pediatrician on @MommyPMD.
1. Bath time should always be supervised. ALWAYS. I cannot emphasize this enough! Kids can drown quickly in a few inches of water. Make sure to keep two eyes on your child during bath time!
2. Adjust your water heater to prevent burns. The maximum temperature of the faucet water should be less than 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Make sure you always check the temperature prior to placing your child in the tub. Also, don’t forget, kids can accidentally knock or hit the faucet to change the temperature while the water is running.
3. Keep dangerous items out of reach. This includes soaps, shampoos, lotions, small toys – anything they could potentially put in their mouths or ingest.
4. Prevent injury from slips and falls. Always place your child age appropriately in the tub; Babies in an age appropriate seat, and toddlers should be assisted getting into the tub. Make sure to cover sharp edges (such as faucets.) You can do this simply even with a towel.
