March is Women’s History Month. BCB salutes the MANY women throughout history who have gotten us to this point today. But, throughout March 2021 we are celebrating and sharing MOMS who are making history RIGHT NOW. As we know, moms are basically super human, super heroes. We tackle so much at once, are the queens of multitasking and at the end of the day—we are almost always putting others’ best interests ahead of our own. So as we look to the future, we want you to meet some incredible women, all of who are making sure brighter days lie ahead for all.
Name: Becky Fawcett
Age: 50 years old
Kids: I have two daughters Jane (15) and Brooke (11)
Where do you live? We live in NYC
TELL US A BIT ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE DOING TO MAKE HISTORY RIGHT NOW.
What am I doing to make history right now. I am the founder of Helpusadopt.org
, an inclusive national adoption grant program that makes a tangible impact in this world by changing the lives of children and families by awarding large problem solving grants up to $15,000. We are also a strong voice that is changing the way people perceive adoption.
WHO IS THE MOST INFLUENTIAL WOMEN YOU KNOW?
I haven’t met her yet: Oprah
THE THEME OF WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH 2021 IS: REFUSING TO BE SILENCED. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO YOU AND HOW DOES IT PLAY OUT IN YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE?
This phrase is particularly important to what I do everyday of my life as an advocate. For generations and even to an extent today generations have been silenced and shamed when it comes to infertility and adoption. We don’t have time for that kind of thinking anymore—we know better. Every day I talk about things others don’t and or won’t and I am proud of that.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES WOMEN FACE TODAY? HOW WILL YOU HELP IMPACT AND CHANGE THIS FOR WOMEN IN THE FUTURE THROUGH YOUR WORK AND/OR PERSONAL LIFE?
One of the biggest challenges that women face today is infertility. Millions of women a year face the fact that IVF is not working and will not work for them. Most don’t want to talk about the question “what if IVF doesn’t work?” and that makes me want to talk about it even more. These women are not always presented with alternative family building options and some have run out of money pursuing these treatments. I hope to provide an educational platform when it comes to adoption as an option to parenthood. And for those who need financial assistance to afford the lump sum cost of adoption Helpusadopt.org
provides a platform of hope.
IF YOU COULD HAVE LUNCH WITH ONE WOMAN THROUGHOUT HISTORY, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
WHAT WOULD PEOPLE BE SURPRISED TO KNOW OR LEARN ABOUT YOU?
I was extremely shy and timid as a kid.
HOW ARE YOU ABLE TO BALANCE BEING A MOM, WORKING AND HELPING TO CHANGE THE WORLD ☺ IS THERE SUCH THING AS BALANCE?
There is no balance really (I don’t think that’s a real thing in my shoes) and some days are better than others. I am very good at multitasking and jumping from project to project. But most importantly, I am good at knowing when I have to take a break. I worked very hard to build my own organization so that I could create my own schedule and be with my kids when I needed to be and I wouldn’t trade that for the world. When the kids were younger I had help and I also have a husband who helps out too. I certainly didn’t do all this alone.
WHAT IS ONE SILVER LINING THAT HAS COME OUT OF THE PANDEMIC?
My husband has taken up cooking and he’s really talented!
HOW DO YOU THINK THAT THE PANDEMIC WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE FOR WOMEN?
I think we have learned that some ( not all )employees can effectively work from home and I think that is something that is really helpful to working moms. I believe we will see more flexibility in full time work moving forward.
What is one piece of advice you would like to offer other moms about motherhood?
It is ok to have help. It is ok to ask for help. And it is ok to lean on others when you do. You really don’t have to do it all.
I am always looking for other women to get involved in our work at Helpusadopt.org
and we have a lot of ways you can get involved remotely–would love to hear from you.
