NAME: Jelitsa Legarreta
COMPANY: Uviña Skin or on Instagram at @uvinaskin
KIDS (names/ages): Scarlett (6 years old)
WHERE DO YOU LIVE: Logan Square, Chicago
I dreamt up Uviña Skin almost 3 years ago while applying skin care products with my then 4 year-old daughter. Finding myself constantly interrupted during my routine (I know all Mama’s can relate!), I began to desire (safe) products that gave me more in less steps. I wanted a vitamin C serum that repaired but ALSO soothed and a moisturizer that hydrated AND had antioxidants. When I couldn’t find it, I decided to create it!
Plan, plan, plan…but be kind to yourself throughout the process.
It’s definitely challenging, but I try to dedicate certain chunks of time for varying priorities (with flexibility of course). I often get up early (hello 5 a.m.!) or go to bed late so that I can get some quiet time to work. And Sunday’s are a day where we enjoy family time without interruption.
If it were easy, everyone would do it.
La Vida Es Un Carnaval by Celia Cruz. (Translates to “Life is a Carnival”). It’s a very positive and upbeat song that I have been listening to since I was a child. Celia was one of my mother’s favorite artists and her music was always filling my home.
I prefer quiet celebrations at home with little luxuries to enjoy throughout the day. Luckily, my husband is a phenomenal cook so it usually begins with an amazing brunch and a champagne cocktail.
Sunscreen, my wool blanket, red lipstick, my passport, & my family (dog included).
I am most happy when I am working towards “something”. Currently, that means working on learning French! That has been a personal goal for years and I am so excited to have been able to carve out time to schedule classes.
Making your way through the world with a child really has a way of restoring your faith in humanity. We’ve always traveled internationally with Scarlett and watching her on a playground with other children that don’t share the same language is so touching- within minutes they’ve found a way and are laughing as they play tag. Or having complete strangers pull out their phones to show you pictures of their children. Or hearing your child yell “Hi Mama!” while on a carnival ride while another woman is waving to her child who is doing the same. It’s all so incredibly beautiful and a reminder that no matter who or where, we are all more similar than we are different.
Now that my daughter is older, she has gotten more involved in celebrating Mother’s Day, which is incredibly sweet and hilarious. The Dollar Tree is her favorite store so she picks out the most random items as gifts! Last year I received a gift bag with a Happy Birthday crown, an Apple Cinnamon candle, and bite-sized Snickers.
Visit Paris! I’m always up for an adventure!
