NAME: Joanna Linton
COMPANY: Rae’s Roots and on Instagram @raesroots
KIDS (names/ages): Rex – 4 years / Rae – 3 years
WHERE DO YOU LIVE: Philadelphia, PA

How did you start your business?

I was inspired to launch Rae’s Roots after the birth of my second child. Postpartum depression hit me out of nowhere, especially since I never experienced anything like this after my first child. After months of self-neglect, which included three trips to the ER from exhaustion and stress, I finally made the decision to do something.I was raised to believe a healthy heart starts with a healthy gut, so I turned to my Chinese roots and began using adaptogens for their healing power and ability to ease tension and stress. This was when the idea for Rae’s Roots was born – but more importantly this was when the platform of prioritizing moms’ wellness was brought forth.

What advice would you give to other moms looking to start a business?

Do not compare your beginning to someone else’s journey. Draw inspiration, take away learnings – but don’t get caught comparing your startup to another business who has been doing it for longer (and has spent a lot more money on it).

How do you balance mom life and work life?  Is there even such a thing?

I think that “balance” changes all the time. Some seasons you’re going to be working more (i.e. in the startup grind phase) and spend less time with your family. Other seasons you’ll find yourself cutting work short and catching every soccer game. I think it’s always changing and that as long as you are okay with how you are spending your time – that’s balance.

Favorite quote/Motto to live by?

You are the greatest project you will ever work on.

What is your theme song or karaoke song?

The entire “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before pt 3” Soundtrack

What are you hoping to do to celebrate Mother’s Day this year?  Anything on your wish list?

I really hope the weather is nice to get outside and take a hike. It has been such a brutal winter in the northeast, I just want to be outside and appreciate the outdoors.

How do you indulge for YOURSELF?

I don’t know if this is indulging, but I really make an effort to fit in exercising. And some days that may just be a 15 minute yoga session. But I really believe movement is medicine – any movement helps you stay out of the trap of stress and is something just for me.

What is the best part about motherhood?

Realizing how much you were meant to be a mom.

Funniest thing your kid has ever said or done?

I was very irritated with my husband the other day and my 4 year old son says “Mommy, you just got to love Daddy.” And I cracked up.

First thing you will do when the pandemic is over?

Travel. Across the street. Across the country – just travel.

Is there anything else that you want the BCB Community to know about you?

I’m obsessed with product and production. I love the process of sourcing and product development – if anyone in the BCB community ever wants any advice on product development – please reach out!
