NAME: Magda Lasota Morales

COMPANY: MLM Brand or on Instagram @magdalasota_ @mlmbrand_

KIDS (names/ages): Adrian 7, Julian 4

WHERE DO YOU LIVE: Los Angeles, CA

How did you start your business?

I launched my business in 2019, though, as with most boot-strapped startups, it took years to get to that point. There are two major drivers that inspired me to launch MLM Brand: 1. my boys (and the desire to have flexibility during those early years of motherhood) and 2. my personal experience as a working mom who had to pump, but didn’t want to give up wearing dresses.

At MLM I focus on creating elevated basics that can be worn during pregnancy and transition seamlessly into the postpartum period. I want to empower this new chapter in women’s lives by designing reliable, high-quality, functional, stylish and versatile pieces that are made in an ethical and sustainable way.

When I had to go back to work at the end of maternity leave in 2014, I couldn’t find a nursing and pumping friendly dress that could take me through my busy day. I needed a dress that was versatile and comfortable (and long) enough to hop on a bike in the morning (which is how I got my son Adrian to daycare before heading downtown to work), and “office-y” enough to wear around the office and during presentations. I was a multitasker and I needed a dress that could do the same.

Finding the right partners for my project, as well as the initial design and development process, took a very long time to complete. I was inexperienced and I didn’t know the fashion industry, which probably added to the timeline, but I kept putting one foot in front of the other. Finally, in June 2019, I launched my label with one design — the Little Breastfeeding Dress — which has since then became our number one bestseller and a new mom’s favorite.

What started as a passion project has now evolved into a full time job. The dream I had last year is now my reality. Still, every day I keep dreaming bigger. And I feel extremely grateful and fortunate to be able to do that.

What advice would you give to other moms looking to start a business?

Do your research, ask questions and go for it. Keep at it. Every day do something, however small, to move your brand forward. Showing up consistently even on days when you don’t feel like it is key to growth.

How do you balance mom life and work life?  Is there even such a thing?

I personally don’t think that balance can be achieved and maintained all the time. I do believe women, parents can have it all; just not ALL at the same time. Trying to achieve “balance” as a new parent, especially when you are still adjusting to how different reality is compared to what your life looked like “before” kids, can lead to too much unnecessary stress.

In our culture, women are expected to do it all and it can be particularly hard when that expectation is also self-imposed. A lot of us feel a sense of shame and inadequacy when we compare our lives to others that seem to have it all together all the time (thanks, social media!). When we fall short, we feel like we failed, but that’s hardly true. I like to think about this in a different way — life has many seasons and raising little kids is just one of them; equal parts beautiful and challenging. Raising my babies is my number one priority and everything else — while important — can wait. It’s a choice I made for myself and my family a few years ago and this is right for us. It might not be right for everyone, and that’s okay. That’s the beauty of motherhood.

My definition of “balance” evolved over the years. The pandemic disrupted our lives in ways we never imagined and it flipped our daily routines upside down. Most days I strive to work, rest, move and play, and that’s my “pandemic” version of balance. Sometimes the dishes don’t get done but I get to spend quality time with my older son playing dinosaur bingo. Some days I get 3 hours of uninterrupted work time, some days I only get 15 minutes. Some evenings dinner is home made and some evenings dinner comes from the microwave. Sometimes I take a long relaxing bath, some days I don’t shower at all. It’s important for me to do things that make me feel good on the inside.

Favorite quote/Motto to live by?

I have a few but, lately, this one is top of mind…

Do what you can with what you have where you are. — Theodore Roosevelt

Occasionally, I find myself wanting more, thinking “if only” or “if I had more”. Don’t get me wrong, I believe in dreaming big and manifesting, but, as an entrepreneur, it can also feel paralyzing. I think progress happens when we dream big, but it’s also important to look back at our journey and appreciate how far we’ve come. With the right mindset and creativity, there’s a lot we can do with what we have at the moment.

What is your theme song or karaoke song?

I’ve never done karaoke, but if I had an opportunity, I would pick the song Mamma Mia! It’s my all time favorite.

What are you hoping to do to celebrate Mothers Day this year?

I’m hoping for a slow day with no chores, a brunch, a walk at the beach and a quiet afternoon at home (no kids, no husband!).

Anything on your wish list?

A book, The Unexpected Joy of the Ordinary by Catherine Gray.

What are five things you cannot live without?

Barre workouts, Dazzle Dry nail polish, coffee, jazz music and chocolate!

How do you indulge for YOURSELF?

Since the pandemic started, I keep it very simple and try to do something that brings me joy every day. Typically, it’s a favorite salad, a glass of wine or a special dessert. It’s using my special holiday dinnerware on a weeknight just because every day is worth celebrating.

What is the best part about motherhood?

My favorite part about being a mom is seeing my boys’ beautiful smiley faces each morning, creating art and showing them the world. On the flip side, I don’t like the number of dishes my boys seem to produce every day, the toys left behind everywhere and my kids fighting about silly (to me!) things.

Funniest thing your kid has ever said or done?

My 4 year old son Julian whom I breastfed for 2 years: “Mommy, I came out of your boobs which is why I love them so much!”

First thing you will do when the pandemic is over?

I will book a weekend away with my girlfriends in Chicago!
