 NAME: Sara Brook

COMPANY: Dessert Gallery Bakery & Cafe and on Instagram @dessertgallerybakery

KIDS (names/ages): Jen, age 31

How did you start your business?

After graduating from the University of Texas with a degree in Sociology and Computer Science in 1983, I was studying for the LSAT and working at a law firm when I decided that becoming a lawyer wasn’t for me. What I really wanted to do was to bake and sell cookies. I started my first dessert company when I was 21, and I sold desserts right out of my parent’s kitchen. After selling my first company, I started and sold yet another dessert company as well. In 1995, I used the lessons I learned and the connections I made in my first two businesses to start Dessert Gallery Gallery Bakery & Cafe with my 4 year old daughter, Jennifer at my side.

What advice would you give to other moms looking to start a business?

It’s ok to figure it out along the way. It can be so easy to want to wait til you’re “ready,” but the longer you wait, the easier it can be to convince yourself that you’ll never be ready. The goal post will shift and shift, if you let it. You don’t have to know everything beforehand because trust me, there will always be more to learn. Trust that your passion, work ethic and dedication will get you where you need to be.

How do you balance mom life and work life?  Is there even such a thing?

I think it exists but it’s important for moms to manage their expectations. If you put too much pressure on yourself to be perfect, then you’ll always feel like you’re failing as a mother and business owner. When I started Dessert Gallery, my daughter, Jen, was only 4 years old and she was right by my side every step of the way. I knew that my balance didn’t always need to include completely separating work life and home life because life happens and a perfect separation doesn’t always exist. But, having her by my side allowed her to see me in action and absorb the values of hard work, compassion and community involvement, all which I was going to teach her as a mom anyway!

Favorite quote/Motto to live by?

My grandmother always told me I had to learn something new every day. I live by that motto and shared it with my daughter when she was little and she lives by it as well. When we talk, we often ask one another what new thing we learned that day. And we both automatically know we’re talking about Mammaw when we ask.

What is your theme song or karaoke song?

Sara Smile by Hall & Oates

What are you hoping to do to celebrate Mother’s Day this year?  Anything on your wishlist?

Book my flight to see my baby, Jen, in Seattle! I haven’t seen her in person since January 2020.

What is the best part about motherhood?

It’s hard to choose because motherhood truly is the gift that keeps on giving. Every time I thought Motherhood couldn’t get any better….it did! My “baby” is now 31, and I continue to marvel at what a wonder she is. Watching her grow and evolve and explore the world around her from infancy to adulthood is such a precious gift. Being a witness to your child coming into who they are and their place in this world is so special and I can’t fully put words to it.

Funniest thing your kid has ever said or done?

When Jen was little, I used to have to sit in the room while she did her homework. One day, she was printing something and she started “dancing” to the noises the printer was making. I nearly fell off the couch because I was laughing so hard! We still talk about the Printer Dance sometimes and we laugh all over again.

First thing you will do when the pandemic is over?

HUG my kid so hard she won’t know what happened. I get choked up just thinking about holding her. I’ve already told her she better get ready because I’m not talking about a little squeeze and a peck on the cheek. I plan on being there a whole week and I may not let her go the whole time I’m in Seattle!
