NAME: Haily Myers

COMPANY: Lucy Darling or in Instagram at @lucydarlingshop

KIDS (names/ages): 3 kiddos

WHERE DO YOU LIVE: Scottsdale, AZ

How did you start your business?

Lucy Darling was born out of my love of motherhood and my desire to cherish the  moments of childhood. I love being a mom and I love watching my babies grow, which is why creating a brand that helps families cherish those moments has been so important to me. I want to create beautiful products to help them enjoy their moments and also remember them. I know what it’s like being a busy mom but also wanting to make everything special as they grow. I want to take the stress out of the equation for parents so that they can enjoy their time being in the moment.

What advice would you give to other moms looking to start a business?

The road to success is definitely marked with lots and lots of mistakes. I think being able to learn is really the key. One of our greatest strengths was that we had never run a retail business selling products. My husband was a teacher and I was a designer. So it would seem we were at a huge disadvantage to someone who had been in the industry, but for us it meant that we already knew we didn’t have the answers. We were determined to find people who were doing it well and to ask them for advice- from large vision down to the tiny details of running a business. Our greatest strength was relying on the knowledge of others and being bold enough to ask.

How do you balance mom life and work life?  Is there even such a thing?

I believe in some version of work/life balance where you find this equilibrium of what works best for your family. It’s not going to look perfect, and often it looks quite messy. You can’t have quality time with your kids, work a full day, and expect that the house doesn’t look like a stampede just came through. But I think in balancing the things that mean the most to you, staying focused on those things, and letting the other things go, you can find what is a meaningful balance. You just really have to be intentional about what those priorities are. I go as far as to write them down and to evaluate them every new year. What is working for us? What do we need to change or do away with? What do I want my legacy to be? These questions are really hard to answer but they have really helped me stay focused and know that if some things look really messy or don’t get my attention right now, it’s ok because I’m keeping my priorities in order. Many times these things get out of balance and I have to push the reset button. It’s a constant struggle.

I have an amazing teammate who is a wonderful father to our kids and the most amazing husband. I could go on about him, but he’s really the biggest part of making the equation work for our family. We are truly a tag-team, going between business, family, and home responsibilities. It is a constant balancing act of trying to make sure all needs are being met but having that partner who is just as committed to all of those things makes it worth it.

Favorite quote/Motto to live by?

I struggle with perfectionism and a mom gave me a really sweet quote that is “Life doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful.” It has been a real encouragement to me to find beauty in my life. The phrase I would like to say I live my life by is “Love one another” but it is often more difficult than it sounds.

What is your theme song or karaoke song?

Definitely Tubthumping by Chumbawamba because that is the song my husband was singing the night we met (at a Karaoke Bar) so I have fond memories of that song.

What are you hoping to do to celebrate Mother’s Day this year?  Anything on your wish list?

My kiddos usually make me some kind of really adorable breakfast to eat in my bed (which can I be honest I don’t even like because it makes me feel like I am sick) but they are just so adorable it makes it all very worth it. I would wish for cool weather here in Arizona so we could venture out for a hike but this year I think I’m out of luck. It is heating up so maybe we will get in the pool instead. Time together is honestly my favorite thing.

What are five things you cannot live without?

  1. My coffee in the morning
  2. The approximately 50 pillows that I sleep with
  3. The sun
  4. Podcasts
  5. Chips

Wow I really boiled my life down to 5 things and I don’t know how to feel about the fact that chips made it on the list.

How do you indulge for YOURSELF?

I try to focus on caring for my mind, body and soul so working out for my body(I love to do Barre workouts and long walks), I love listening to thought provoking podcasts for my mind, and time to read and pray for my soul (which means waking up early- a really huge challenge for me but so rewarding to have a moment before my kiddos wake up).

What is the best part about motherhood?

I think the best part of motherhood is probably how it changes you. You don’t notice it but as time goes on you look back and this really hard thing of loving and raising these little people really does. It also reveals a lot of things about you, for better or worse. But it grows you. I’m thankful for that and how much motherhood has made me better at loving other people and being gracious to them and to myself as well. I need a lot of that too.

Funniest thing your kid has ever said or done?

I have far too many to recall but probably they are just really funny to me because I know their personalities so well.

First thing you will do when the pandemic is over?

Our family loves to travel so that will be something we would love to continue to do. Seeing the world as much as we can is what I will be very much looking forward to. I’m ready to pack that suitcase and I would even unpack it at this point (the worst part of travel).

Is there anything else that you want the BCB Community to know about you?

I would love people to know that as a mother, wife and business owner, I am never doing all of those things perfectly or as well as I would like even sometimes. If you have a lot of things on your plate, just know that you are not alone in the fact that it’s impossible to run on all cylinders in all of those areas! I’ve tried for a long time and I can tell you, it’s not possible to be all things to all people!
