I am a mom (x2), a wife, a startup founder. I value family and relationships. I try to spend as much time outside in the warm sunshine as possible, and very little time outside if it is <50 degrees (hello California has spoiled me). I want to work on solving meaningful problems, which is why I am so excited about Toucan (more below). I like being silly with my two girls and can never have too many good puns in my repertoire. More on my company mission below!
My company, Toucan, is on a mission to give everybody somebody to talk to! We are harnessing peer support to fill the gap in support options out there, and to give people a way to speak and listen to others who are going through something similar. Whether it is becoming a new parent, career stressors, or a global pandemic, life throws a lot at us; with Toucan we can support each other and not have to go it alone.
I was a high school cheerleader! So not my personality…but my school had no gymnastics team so it was the closest thing!
Well I would say I don’t – none of us balance it ALL, even if admitting that is easier said than done. It is a moving target – some weeks the kids need more and I just get through only priority things at work, other times work ramps up and my husband takes over more at home. Once in a while grandparents come to visit and I get to prioritize my marriage too . This year has definitely been challenging in constantly having to switch gears between kids and work while all at home. #momhacks…for work, if I read an email and it is a simple response like scheduling or answering a question I try to respond immediately; those of us who are opening things, reading, and deciding to respond later just add the mental load of having to think about it twice. For home, the kids get to pick out whatever they want to wear, I’ve stopped spending any energy on it – this means sundresses in December with sweaters on top and rainboots on the feet and that is OK!
Yup! I was just actually speaking to a fellow mom on Toucan about this, wondering how is it possible to have mom guilt when I literally have spent every day for the past 13 months with the kids?! She reminded me to try to set expectations with the kids “we can read a book now but in 30 minutes I need to work for a few hours and then I’ll be back with you for dinner time.” Simple steps to make them aware of what’s going on.
Taco Tuesday! Helps with at least 1 day of meal prep 🙂
I have two constantly running mama text threads that have been a life line really since giving birth, one is with my sister and two cousins and the other is with 3 of my childhood friends.
And I am adding to my tribe with the use of anonymous 1:1 Huddles on Toucan!
No one really talked about the stress and changes it puts on your relationship with your spouse or partner. Lack of sleep + both people facing completely unfamiliar territory as parents can be so difficult – I wish someone would have told me to expect this, and that also not to worry, we would find our new rhythm after a few months and some sleep!
Read or do a crossword puzzle, preferably outside in the sunshine.
They’re old enough to be able to do some things on their own, but young enough that they still want me around Also specifically watching them learn things is so much fun – riding a bike, learning to read, learning songs, the explosion of vocabulary…
I live a plane’s ride away from most of my family – definitely miss the ease and convenience of air travel (also who would have EVER said travel w kids was easy and convenient!)
Also travel, plus anxiety-free play dates.
It was impossible for us to “hide” or separate our home lives from our work lives – seeing or hearing a kid, spouse, or dog in the background of a video call was normalized. It forced us to see the whole picture of our colleagues’ lives and I hope some of that remains post pandemic.
Just wish I had come across BCB when I was expecting and a new mom – such great resources and community, I’m glad I am involved now!
