Small Business Spotlight: On Your Mark

By Mandi Kreisher

We are celebrating businesses we love here at BCB! Meet Emily from On Your Mark, she is the owner of On Your Mark, a Nike Master Trainer and a Nike Run Coach. Read our interview below to find out why she wanta to get (and keep) your kids moving.

-Name?

Emily Hutchins

-Name of company?

On Your Mark

-IG handle?

@onyourmarkstudios

-Where is your studio located?

Westloop, Chicago

-How and why did you start your business?

We wanted to bridge the gap between group fitness and personal training. So that inspired small group training, 15 years ago!  We also felt that everyone, despite athletic ability deserved the same high level experience. We hold several kid focused classes AND are passionate about helping kids stay active.

-When did you start your business? How has the pandemic affected it?

2007  the pandemic has changed training, a lot of people are still training from home, which makes me nervous about their performance potential, risk of injury and boredom.  It will take time for group training to come back to the pre-pandemic numbers.

-How might your business change when the pandemic is over (if at all)?

I’m hopeful that numbers in the gym will continue to improve.  I’m also hopeful that people will realize the need to come back for their mental health, physical health, and for the community.

-What would someone be surprised to learn about your business?

Despite their athletic ability, they’re going to get a high level experience every time they come in.  Our attention to detail and clients performance is what’s most important to us.  Our training is about the long term, not necessarily how many calories one can burn in an hour.

-What is one piece of advice for new business owners that you wish someone told you beforehand?

No one cares about your business as much as you do.  Expect to put in the hours, from actually doing your job, to making sure the lights are on and the place is clean; daily.

-When you have time to yourself, what do you like to do that isn’t business related?

You can definitely find me hanging with my dogs and my partner.  Work can consume a lot of the day to day, so family and friend time is essential.
