Emily’s Top Five 2022 Summer Books

By Emily Prawda Weiss

I read a book a week. I made this commitment during the pandemic to ensure that I would be doing something productive besides baking, cleaning and constantly cooking! I’ve always been a reader, from when I was a tween, I devoured books like candy and was the student who had a Scholastic book club order comprised of more than 10 books easily. I would be elated at the mall after visiting Waldenbooks and convincing my dad to spend $100 at time. I paused my reading habit when my girls were younger and now that they appreciate reading as much as I do, I look forward to our Saturdays when we read as a family, each of us devouring our own book genres. I read engrossing books this summer which I post each one to my Good Reads account and to my IG Story highlights. Below are my top five books from Summer 2022:

The Hotel Nantucket by Elin Hildebrand. Elin Hildebrand never disappoints me. Each summer I look forward to her new release and this summer’s page turner involved an influencer, a haunted hotel and a sweet relationship between a hotel manager and a celebrated chef in Nantucket’s small island summer community.

The Violin Conspiracy by Brendan Slocumb. I loved this book–it covered race perceptions, a positive teacher/student relationship and classical music. This book is must-read for any teacher.

Perfect Strangers by J.T. Geissenger. This erotic(!) book made the rounds on my FB book groups. It mixed a compelling romantic love story with lots of juicy details and a BIG SURPRISE at the end.

Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt. My daughter wants to be a Marine Biologist so anything to do with sea life is a must read for us. This heartwarming book was just lovely. Lost and found family relationships, financial struggles and an intellectual octopus were the main cast set against a older aquarium in Seattle which only contributed to the book’s sweet message.

City of Likes by Jenny Mollen. I LOVE Jenny Mollen. She is super funny, witty, clever and once, she led a Barry’s fitness class which I had to privilege to participate. This book is for every mom out there–including the trials and tribulations of private school and applying to school in general; kids, food, family and all of the emotional labor that we, as moms, harbor daily. I was laughing out loud many times–I definitely need to read her other titles in addition to her Instagram account.
